Banavasi was a glorious capital of the Kadambas, the first royal dynasty that excercised sovereignty over a vast area. The hand-axes of the neolithic period, are found in the region. Banavasi is reffered to in Ayodhyakanda of Ramayana. It is names as Vanavasaka in Bhishma Parva of Mahabharata.
Banglore area was inhabited during the first centuryAD and had trade contacts with Rome. Images of Chola period and Cola architectural features in some of its temples indicate its prominent place during the period of the Cholas.
