The legend of the Sacred Tooth Relic is steeped in ancient Buddhist thought and culture. Annually, during a ten-day period in July or August, the relic is venerated with a series of great processions. Each evening hundreds of drummers, dancers, torchbearers and elephants walk through the streets of Kandy in a grand sacred pegeant. This historic event is the Kandy Esala Perahera.
